A Glorious Day for Swedish Footy
Söder Win Their First SAFF Flag
Saturday September 19th was a big day for Aussie Rules in Sweden.
In Stockholm, the SAFF Grand Final dished up a nailbiting end to the season for the second year in a row.
With the mighty Solna Axemen – Premiers in 2007 & 2008 and SM in 2008 & 2009 – unfortunately left cheering on from the sidelines, Bromma and Södermalm were left to battle it out in perfect, sunny conditions.
While the Vikings had plenty of chances to hand the Blues back-to-back Grand Final losses, their wayward kicking proved too costly in the end, with Jordo’s boys running out winners 9.9.63 to 6.20.56.
Malmö Bring The Danish Cup To Sweden
At the very same time as the SAFF Grand Final was being played, down in Skåne the Port Malmö Maulers – adopted home of 2008 Premiership Axemen player Kalles Kaviar – were battling it out against the North Copenhagen Barracudas to become the first Swedish team to bring take the Danish AFL Premiership Cup across the Öresund.
Along with the Helsingborg Saints, the Maulers have been fighting it out in recent years alongside the established teams from Danish Zealand and Jutland in the DAFL. And this year everything seemed to click.
After dismissing with league powerhouse the Farum Cats in the Prelim, Malmö won the right to host the Grand Final at home, where they faced off against reigning Premiers the Barracudas.
After a tight, epic struggle that saw the visitors from Copenhagen ahead on the scoreboard from the first minute until deep into the final quarter… Port Malmö fought back bravely and made the most of their opportunities late in the game to come out 4 point winners.
Considering the quality of the game game and the fact it was played out in front of a capacity, 200+ crowd, and with the world’s media (read: a couple of local papers) recording the momentus occasion… it seemed the real winner was Swedish Footy.
You can read about the Maulers’ history making victory in Sydsvenskan or see more pics on the Port Malmö blog.

Would have very interesting to have a Stockholm v Malmö game to decide the best team in Scandinavia…
